PohlCon supported the expansion of Berlin's U5 underground line with cable management systems and profile rails – a major project for the city's mobility.
For decades, Berlin's U5 underground line has connected the eastern city centre with the districts in the east and north-east. After reunification, plans to extend the line to the west were finally put into action. Today, the line runs to the main station. The expansion began in the early 2000s. Since December 2020, the U5 has been fully operational with a total length of 22.4 km.
Perfect for tunnels: curved rails
We were involved in the second construction phase from October 2017 to March 2020 and supported the expansion with a variety of technical solutions from the field of cable support systems for optimal cable routing in the tunnel. In total, we supplied almost 58 km of profile rails in various designs and lengths. This also included curved rails specially adapted to the tunnel curvature in partial lengths between 1.1 and 3.7 m. In addition, a total of 5.3 km of profile rails in various partial lengths were pre-assembled with 44,000 welded cable support troughs, supplemented by 7,000 individual cable support troughs.
For secure cable routing
We also supplied 12.5 km of cable trays, 800 m of mesh cable trays and 3,200 brackets for securing cables to walls and ceilings. Our walkable floor duct BKOS was used for cable laying close to the floor, protecting the cable system from dirt, flying sparks and mechanical stress over a length of 1.5 km.
We are proud to have been involved in this important infrastructure project as a partner and are delighted to have contributed to improving public transport in Berlin.
