Horchheim TunnelKoblenz, Germany

In the south of Koblenz is the Horchheim Tunnel, built in 1902, which connects the Horchheim Bridge to the Koblenz-Pfaffendorf junction on a single track. Due to environmental influences, such as the ingress of mountain water, the structure deteriorated to such an extent that the tunnel reached the end of its useful life in 2021. A complete overhaul was urgently required.

The main construction work on the 583-metre-long tunnel began in August 2021. The tracks, the tunnel lining, the portals and the southern retaining wall were dismantled and rebuilt. The tunnel was bored out and raised to create space for new overhead lines and a pressurised water-tight concrete base with drainage. The tunnel was also fitted with modern equipment to comply with current safety regulations. The client compensated for unavoidable interventions in nature with compensation works, and great importance was also attached to animal welfare.

Deutsche Bahn once again relied on anchor channels from PohlCon for this major project.

The JTA K 28/15 anchor channel, the JTA W 53/34 anchor channel as a curved anchor channel pair and predetermined breaking point bolts were used to fasten the overhead lines. The stainless steel rails are characterised by a lower weight with a constant load level and corrosion resistance class CRC III.

The construction project was successfully completed in October 2023 and rail traffic was able to resume.
