With almost 60 million passengers (2023), Frankfurt Airport is Germany's largest and Europe's sixth largest airport. In 2026, passenger numbers, which have fallen due to the pandemic, are expected to return to pre-crisis levels (~70.5 million) and continue to grow from then on.
In order to meet future needs, Fraport AG is continuously expanding its infrastructure and has been building a new, third terminal since 2015. PohlCon has also been on site since 2021, with over 140 employees from various specialist departments overseeing the project to bring it to a successful conclusion together with Fraport AG.
PohlCon was already selected as a reliable manufacturer and partner for the shell construction phase. The ISOPRO steel connection was used for the façade construction, the Pentaflex sealing system was used for the construction of the floor slab and the Pentaflex ABS construction element was used to support the ceilings. The dimensions of the airport project are also reflected in the scope of the order for the technical building equipment: PohlCon produced, supplied and installed 123 km of cable trays, almost 50 km of vertical ladders and C-profile-rails as well as 14 km of KHU profiles. A further 380,000 individual components ensure the correct positioning and fastening of the products.
Terminal 3 is scheduled to open in 2026 with three gates and a capacity of up to 19 million passengers per year. In its final form, with a fourth pier, it will be able to handle up to 25 million passengers a year.
The building's floor area of around 176,000 m2 is roughly the size of 25 soccer pitches. If all the floor space is included, it is even more than 400,000 m2. Thanks to the new Sky Line railroad, the new building is connected to the existing terminals and has its own highway access as well as 8,500 parking spaces in the purpose-built parking garage.
