For decades, the current U5 subway line connected the eastern city center with the east and northeast of Berlin. Plans to extend the line to the west date back to the 1970s, but it was only with the reunification of Germany that these could be realized.
Work began in the early 2000s to connect the existing line with the current “Hauptbahnhof” terminus in two separate construction phases.
The now 22.4 km long U5 line has been fully operational since December 2020.
Our company was involved in the second construction phase (October 2017 - March 2020) and supported the expansion of the new line with a variety of products and system solutions from the cable support systems product category.
PohlCon produced and supplied almost 38 km of profile rails in various designs and lengths.
These include curved profile rails individually adapted to the curvature of the tunnel in partial lengths of 1.1 to 3.7 m - a total of 31.5 km, 13.5 km of straight profile rails in a length of 6 m and 7 km of straight profile rails in partial lengths of 0.4 to 2 m. A further 5.3 km of profiled rails in partial lengths of 1.1 to 1.5 m were prefabricated with 44,000 welded-on cable trays and delivered together with 7,000 individual cable trays and 3,200 brackets. As part of the support structure systems, profile rails are versatile and can be adapted to suit a wide range of applications.
PohlCon also supplied 11 km of P cable trays, 1.5 km of RGS cable trays and 0.8 km of mesh cable trays for the safe and orderly routing of cable lines on walls and ceilings.
The BKOS walkable floor trunking with a total length of 1.5 km was supplied for cable routing close to the floor. The system, which is completely closed to the outside, protects the cables from flying sparks, dirt and other mechanical influences.
The range of products with which PohlCon was able to support the construction project once again demonstrates the diversity and scope of our product range. We are very pleased to have contributed to improving mobility in Berlin as a project partner and to have been part of this - also historically - significant project.
