Berlin's main railway station is to be better connected to public transport. This is the goal of the construction of the new S-Bahn line S21, the so-called City S-Bahn. This line, which runs from north to south, connects the northern stations Wedding and Westhafen directly with the Central Station. From there, the line continues south via Potsdamer Platz to Yorckstraße and the southern part of the circle railway.
The major project, estimated at a total cost of 900 million euros, is scheduled for completion in 2037 at the earliest and is divided into three construction phases. Construction phase 1 (BA 1), valued at around 400 million euros, connects the northern part of Berlin’s circle railway to the Central Station and also includes two new transport stations: One underground at Berlin Central Station and another on a bridge over Perleberger Straße. The section is scheduled to be in operation in 2026.
On the 1st construction phase, 3.7 kilometers (2.3 miles) of track will be laid. These run over three bridges and a 700-metre (0.4 miles) tunnel. A wide variety of cables and lines for electricity and the signal must be laid along these. That is why there are various models of our cable support troughs in cable shafts along the tracks to ensure safe cable routing in the shafts.
In total, PohlCon supplied and installed almost 16,000 cable support troughs of its own brand PUK for construction phase 1. Depending on the requirements and the installation substrate, the cable support troughs were either attached directly to the substrate or fastened on anchor channels. Among others, our cable support trays KTW-A 5 and KTW-A 10 as well as individual solutions were used.
