Change in standards for underfloor duct systems: No problem for CHALI

Since 28 April 2023, there has been a new draft standard for DIN EN IEC 61084 Part 2-2, which deals with the special requirements for flush floor installation trunking systems as well as underfloor and onfloor systems. The future series of standards DIN EN IEC 61084 largely corresponds to the previously valid series of standards DIN EN 50085, as their content has been adopted in the current work on IEC 61084. Both standards are valid in parallel until further notice. However, an important change in the EN 61084 series of standards concerns the so-called service units. Service units are now used to describe all units that provide access to sockets. In the previous communication, this applied exclusively to floor outlet boxes.

Brush ducts are also service units

This change in the series of standards has an impact on flush floor brush ducts: they are not duct lengths, but two-metre long service units. However, a distinction must be made between open flush floor trunking with brush strip and coverable flush floor brush trunking. According to the standard adaptation, it is in conformity with the standard to plan and install open brush ducts if the opening is used in the area of the wall, at a maximum distance of 30 mm from it. However, if the brush is oriented towards the room and not towards the wall, the use is no longer in conformity with the standard.

Standard-compliant solution for systems in the room

For the type of installation in the room, the regulations of DIN EN 50085 continue to apply. This states that electrical installation trunking systems must meet at least the IP20 degree of protection when unused and that openings that are not used must be closed. For the planning and use of brush trunking systems, this means that they only comply with the standard if the openings are designed to be coverable. The design of the CHALI screed-flush brush duct is based on this principle. When not in use, the brush strip is secured by a cable outlet flap that complies with protection class IP30. If cables are run, the cable outlet flap is recessed flush. This not only allows for the planning and installation of brush ducts with brushes positioned into the room. Their placement across the room is also standard-compliant in this way.
